In Atlanta in 2005, a woman held hostage in her apartment overnight by an escaped prisoner. She ended up reading portions of Rick Warren’s PURPOSE DRIVEN LIFE to him, and the story is now being made into a movie, Captive, that releases in theaters today. It's a drama about the spiritual collision of two broken lives. Brian Nichols, subject of a city wide manhunt and desperate to make contact with his newborn son, takes recovering meth addict Ashley Smith hostage in her own apartment. While reading aloud, Ashley and her would-be killer each face crossroads where despair and death intersect hope. The movie stars David Oyelowo, who played Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in the recent film, Selma. Click HERE for a special greeting from David Oyelowo.
The book tells the same story as the movie, and is a gripping account of what happened that day. It's amazing to think that something that sounds like a movie plot really happened. I can't even imagine what it was like for either of them.
I have a chance to give away a copy of a book. To enter, leave a comment about something in the past that has held you captive, for good or bad. Deadline is September 23.
