Book Nook: Holiday Books from Candlewick Press

I recently had a chance to review a few great new books from Candlewick Press. The first was Where’s Waldo? Destination: Everywhere! This book takes classic scenes with a new format. The familiar goal of searching for Waldo and given objects are still included, but there's also a frame scene search that carries throughout the book. It's an excellent option for car rides, since it can occupy kids (or adults) for a long time, working on observation skills, patience, and perseverance.

Martin Handford is the creator of Waldo. He began his career as a freelance illustrator specializing in drawing crowd scenes — and the rest is history. He lives in England.

There are also some great craft books available. Press Out and Color: Christmas Ornaments and Make & Play: Christmas are great for the craft and art lover. Both of these make easy DIY Christmas projects. The ornaments and the play pieces are printed on sturdier pages that are fairly durable with careful kids. They are easy enough to be enjoyed by kids as young as preschool age, but are classic, fun shapes that can be enjoyed by adults as well.

Joey Chou was born in Taiwan and moved to California in his early teens. He works by day as a visual development artist on feature animated films and by night as a picture-book illustrator.

Kate McLelland has illustrated several forthcoming books. She lives in Edinburgh with her husband and two children.
