Pet Pointers: Pet Peeves of Pet Ownerships

They track dirt into your house daily, their hair accumulates on your furniture, their noses smudge your windows, and it’s hard to avoid the stink that can follow them around, but millions of Americans agree, they put it up with it because their dog or cat is part of the family. This is why as part of National Pet Month, the cleaning experts with Two Maids & A Mop, the nation’s fastest-growing cleaning franchise, created easy steps anyone can follow to eliminate four pet peeves of pet ownership.

There is a lot of animal dirt inside homes across the country. These days, pet ownership is more common than not. Research shows more than half of U.S. households, about 85 million families, own a furry friend.

“Our cleaning experts are in homes around the country every day and we see the messes pets can create,” says Joey Hunter, Two Maids & A Mop Home Office Director. “Our staff knows all of the tricks to get rid of pet odors, wipe away stains on floors and furniture and eliminate the dirt and dander animals can track through every room of a house.”

Pet Peeves of Pet Ownership:

  1. Pet Odor: Owning either a dog or cat means your house could stink from time to time. You can remove the odor, without removing the pet.
TWO MAIDS & A MOP ADVICE
    • Cats and dogs leave behind a trail of dirt and fur. First, gently sweep all hard surfaces and scoop up the residue into a dustpan. After sweeping, go back and mop tile, hardwood or linoleum.
    • Vacuum the stink away. Carpet is a magnet for dust, dirt and dander. Vacuum every nook, cranny, crack and crevice. Once your carpet and rugs are vacuumed, move to furniture, curtains and drapes.
    • Keep fabric fresh. Wash any fabric in your home that could get smelly, like bed linens, couch linens, pillow covers, throw pillows, anything that is machine-washable. **If your washing machine is too small, take large items to the laundromat and do it in one clean sweep.

  1. Pet Stains: Despite hours of training, pet accidents are going to happen. Vinegar is a great tool for cleaning the dirtiest of messes.
TWO MAIDS & A MOP ADVICE
    • Urine – When you can, clean it up as quickly as possible, when urine dries, it will set into carpet. Soak up the mess with either a cloth or paper towel. In a spray bottle, mix up two cups vinegar and two cups warm water with four tablespoons of baking soda. Spray the mixture on the soiled area of carpet, let dry for up to 10 minutes, then blot with a soft cloth.
    • Vomit – No easy way to say it, the acid in animal vomit can stain carpet quickly. Blot the area with a towel, then mix up two cups of warm water, one tablespoon of salt, one tablespoon of liquid soap and one-half cup of vinegar into a container. Put a soft cloth in the mixture and blot the stain lightly. You might need to do it several times before the stain disappears. Blot the cleaned area with a wet cloth before drying with a towel.

  1. Pet Tracks: If your pet goes outside, chances are high he or she will be tracking dirt, mud, grass and much more into your home.
TWO MAIDS & A MOP ADVICE
    • Sweep floor immediately after pet returns from outside.
    • Place a rug or runner that is specialized to absorb dirt by the door.
    • Look into a hand mitt made with a microfiber material that enhances cleaning power to use on animal feet.

  1. Pet Smudges: Dogs and cats love to sit in front of a window and protect their yards. Usually, they can leave a smudge or two on the glass in the process.
TWO MAIDS & A MOP ADVICE
    • Use a mixture of warm water and a few drops of mild dish soap to clean window panes. Wipe from top to bottom with a squeegee and/or a microfiber cloth. Clean inside and outside to make the window crystal clear.

“These tips will not only help pet owners clean up after their four-legged friends, but also help them save valuable family time,” said Hunter. “We take pride in providing high-quality cleaning in every one of our markets as well as passing along helpful advice to working moms and dads who would rather spend time relaxing together than hours apart tackling housework.”
