With about 40 percent of all moving taking place during the summer, the leading personal finance website WalletHub conducted an in-depth analysis of 2015's Best & Worst Cities for Families.

In order to help American families find the ideal location to put down roots, WalletHub compared each of the 150 most populated U.S. cities across 30 key metrics. Our data set ranges from crime rates to school system rankings to housing costs.

  • Detroit’s per-capita violent crime rate is 42 times higher than that of Irvine, Calif.
  • The median family annual income adjusted for cost of living is four times higher in Plano, Texas, than Hialeah, Fla.
  • The divorce rate is 3 times higher in Cleveland than in Fremont, Calif.
  • The percentage of families receiving food stamps is 20 times higher in Detroit than in Irvine, Calif.
  • The percentage of families living below the poverty line is 10 times higher in Detroit than in Overland Park, Kan.
