Giveaway: It's Snowing in Hawaii

"It's Snowing in Hawaii" tells the fictional story of a Honolulu blizzard in verse. With Hawaiian flannel shirts, bearskin hula skirts, and figure skating on Pearl Harbor, young readers are likely to enjoy to the silly rhymes of a Hawaiian snow day.

I had a chance to interview the author to learn more.

What inspired you to write the book?
As the father of two young girls (ages 3 and 4), I’m constantly inspired by them. I love being a Dad, and I wanted to write a story that my daughters could enjoy. I wanted them to be able to hold a storybook in their hands and say: “My Daddy made this for me.”

Why is the idea of snow in Hawaii so appealing to kids?
I think it appeals to a child’s imagination. When we’re young, we love to play games of “make believe” and we create alternate worlds based on our imagination. I think kids will find the idea of snow in Hawaii enjoyable because it explores a silly “what if” scenario. It takes them on a rhyming adventure highlighting two things that never go together: a winter wonderland on the beaches of Hawaii.

What do you think kids will enjoy most about the book?
I think kids will enjoy the light-hearted rhymes and the beautiful illustrations. The artist, Melanie Stephens, did an amazing job constructing the world of a snow day in Honolulu – featuring Hawaiian flannel shirts, bearskin hula skirts, and figure skating on Pearl Harbor.
If you'd like a chance to win a copy of the book, leave a comment with what you find most intriguing about the story. Deadline is January 20th.
