Healthy Habits: Fort Lauderdale Airport Shooting Counseling from MDLIVE

   MDLIVE offering free online counseling in the wake of Fort Lauderdale Airport shooting
Local telehealth company extending counseling services to people affected by shooting events

WHAT:
In an effort to help bring healing to the community following the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport shooting, MDLIVE is offering free online behavioral health counseling sessions to individuals impacted by Friday’s tragedy.
WHO: 
All individuals directly impacted by the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport shooting (i.e., victims, victims’ families, airport and airline employees, travelers, etc.)
WHEN:
Free counseling is available through February 15
WHERE:  
Individuals may call MDLIVE’s dedicated hotline at 888-959-9516 and provide the code “FLLCounsel” to schedule up to three counseling sessions at no charge. Sessions will be conducted via video, so access to a web browser or iOS or Android device is required.
MORE INFO: Individuals impacted by Friday’s shooting are encouraged to talk to a behavioral health           counselor to work through the grief caused by these events. Symptoms of grief may occur shortly after a tragedy or take several days or weeks to surface.
Larry Gleit, executive vice president and general manager of MDLIVE Behavioral Health and clinical social worker, encourages individuals and their families to look out for these common warning signs of distress:
  • Fear or anxiety of leaving home or being in a public place
  • Nightmares and/or recent change in sleep patterns
  • Frequent and bothersome thoughts of the event
  • Depressed mood or social isolation
