In the Kitchen (ITK) Culinary, founded in 2008, holds workshops and classes teaching authentic recipes and dishes, in a fun, open, interactive kitchen space. ITK Culinary is more than just cooking. It is a space that allows people to network and establish relationships, embrace new cultures, and to be mindful of their past. ITK Culinary offers Cooking Classes, Corporate Team Building, Catering, and Kid related activities such as Camps/Parties and more. ITK's new home in Emeryville was the kitchen used for Top Chef Season 1, and was featured in the movie Hereafter, starring Matt Damon, Bryce Howard and filmed by Clint Eastwood.
Doug Eng, the CEO of ITK Culinary is foodie obsessed and is drawn to exploring new cuisines and flavors. As a child, his family business created homemade Steamed Pork Buns (Cha Siu Bao), and his first job was at The Donut Corner located in Oakland. Eng then moved on to work both front and back of house at various Bay Area eateries. Eng says, “I want ITK to help build a community of recipe shepherds that can teach future generations how to cook their native cuisine.” Classes focus on authenticity, execution and fun.
ITK wants people to understand that creating beautiful food is within their realm and certainly achievable. Classes are focused on home cooking in order to broaden their horizons and add another arrow in their quiver. The adventure of food is continuous and filled with high and low moments. ITK helps bring people closer to the food they eat. After doing much research, it has been made clear that home cooked meals are the healthiest, yet consumers should be armed with the right knowledge. The proverb "Give a man a fish and you will feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you will feed him for a lifetime" encompassed the ITK lifestyle. The kitchen is aware of time constraints of cooking at home with working families, and has also heard from new parents, addressing health concerns, so classes are designed to be the motivating factor in getting people cooking again. Whether shopping for ingredients or knowing which hardware to use, classes will guide people from start to finish. Those who are interested should have the knowledge and technical ability to cook for themselves. Let's go fishing!
Prices for classes vary by instructors, class and format, a detailed calendar can be found HERE.
