Parenting Pointers: Warm-Weather Tips for Baby

Babies are miracles but one thing they don’t do well is regulate their body temperatures. If they get too hot, their tiny bodies cannot cope like an older child or adult would. Fabrics that retain heat and moisture can lead to dangerous overheating. Making sure that a new baby is comfortable, warm (but not too warm), soothed and safe is best accomplished with fabrics and products that are conceived with love, designed by science.

The best bet to accomplish this is to put fabrics next to their skin that wick moisture away. By pulling perspiration away from the skin and through the fabric, the moisture can evaporate and babies remain cool, calm and collected. At least until they’re hungry again!

Whether on vacation at the beach or asleep in their cribs, keeping babies safe is the priority number 1 for all parents.

Here are a few other tips:

  • Limit exposure to sun, water and wind, which can be hard on babies. Direct sunlight isn’t recommended and extreme shifts in temperatures are hard for them to regulate with their tiny bodies.
  • Cool comfortable clothes are essential—the Dailies bodysuit being a perfect choice! Don’t forget a hat!
  • You also want to keep them out of direct light to avoid having to use too much sunscreen on newborns / young babies. Nonetheless, you should have some handy to put on tiny feet or faces that might be harder to keep out of the sun completely.
  • Always watch for signs of overheating (flushed skin, developing rash, irritability), as well as dehydration (dry diapers, less saliva or tears, general lethargy). If you see these signs, it’s time to bring baby somewhere cooler and to make sure they have a drink of breastmilk / formula to rehydrate them and provide them with the electrolytes they need.
