Book Nook: Pairs of People

I recently had the chance to review Pairs of People by Mark Kennedy Shriver and Jeanne Shriver. The book is a  follow-up to their Christopher Award-winning book 10 Hidden Heroes, and aims to help children learn about how working together makes the world a better place. The Kennedy and Shriver families have a history of giving back - Eunice Kennedy founded the Special Olympics and Sergeant Shriver helped found the Peace Corps. Mark and Jeanne want to be able to inspire new generations to help others, whether it's in big or small ways.

I like the pattern of the book - as a math teacher, it's fun to see when there's a little bit of math in a book, and this book shows how pairs of people working together multiply to create even more helpers throughout the neighborhood. Many of the actions in the book are things kids can either do themselves or are likely to have seen done in their own community, so it makes the idea of service much more accessible and can hopefully inspire conversations about how your own family can serve others!
