Travel Tips: Beer Biking in Japan

Imagine embarking on a special bike outfitted for 16 passengers who must commit to pedaling together for a successful journey, and then throw in a delightful cultural experience plus a sip or two of beer and you have Ichiroku, an experience like none other.

This special bike, outfitted in Holland, takes travelers deep into spots of unique Onomichi to places rarely seen by visitors and only accessible through the eyes and connections of their local guides. The group working together, even as strangers, results in a unique sense of community. Onomichi is the only place in Japan where a 16-passenger bike can be ridden on public roads. The trail runs through the most hidden spots in the town such as the Shingai entertainment district which dates back to the Edo period and served as the backdrop for the filming of Tokyo Story.

Unlike traditional bikes, there is no need to hold onto the handlebars thus allowing people to sip and savor local delights along the way. Along some journeys, visits to the Onomichi Brewery is included along with a stop at the city’s oldest vinegar storehouse not normally open to the public for sips of special brews and an education on the manufacturing process.
