Book Nook - Through the Garden Gate: Author Interview

I recently had a chance to interview Sharon Rose, author of Through the Garden Gate.

What was the inspiration behind this book?
My intention was to leave something for the next generation. My hope is that this book sparks curiosity in children, encouraging them to ask questions, to observe more closely, and to remain engaged in the magic of discovery. Above all, I hope it inspires children to step outside, to explore, and to form a deeper connection with nature—and that it creates space for parents and children to bond, perhaps sharing this story together at bedtime.

How can families encourage nature exploration throughout the gardens in their own community?
I encourage parents to plant gardens in their front yards. Lawns are great for young kids, but if the lawn is not getting used, consider removing it and planting a pollinator garden or planting a vegetable garden in their front yard. Add seating areas or a bocce ball court to encourage connecting with neighbors.

Neighbors could coordinate with their other neighbors when planting fruit trees, so that everyone isnt planting just a lemon tree.. but one neighbor an apple, one a fig, etc.. then they can share
the abundance of fruit with their neighbors.

Why is it important to foster a love of plants and nature in young children?
I’ve grown increasingly concerned about how disconnected both children and adults have become from nature—and, often, from one another. Too frequently, I see moments where attention is pulled toward a screen rather than the people right in front of us, especially children. While technology is an essential part of modern life, so too is the need to connect: with each other, and with the natural world around us.

I am also hoping this book will inspire the next generation of land stewards. A love of plants and being in nature will inspire our next generation to care and project natural environments.
