Parenting Pointers: Zoom Holiday Gatherings

Many of us just spent Thanksgiving apart from our families, or in celebrations that look very different than in years past. If you were able to do a virtual holiday gathering that was successful, that's great! If you've never tried it before, or yours didn't go all that well, you might be able to benefit from this interview that I recently did with Vivid-Pix CEO Rick Voight. These are great tips in case Christmas needs to look different - but they're also good for families (like mine) that are geographically spread apart!

Q. How can people use Zoom to connect for holiday gatherings?

A. Vivid-Pix and Friends have created tutorial videos on how to safely stay connected this holiday season at https://www.vivid-pix.com/education

We’ve created a multitude of classes that include:

• How to use Zoom.

• How to record today’s feelings for tomorrow’s reminiscing.

• How to share an image on Zoom and relive yesteryear’s fun and laughter.

• Using Gallery View to capture togetherness conversations.

• Using Speaker View to record individual feelings.

• How to “interview” older family members to ensure involvement and engagement.

• Fun activities for young and young at heart to enjoy remotely by Zoom or when physically together.

• How to improve cherished photo memories.

Q. What are some of the features that are best suited for larger or smaller virtual groups?

A. Within Zoom Classes, https://www.vivid-pix.com/zoom-classes, we have included classes for individual and group sharing.

Classes are tailored to various activities.  For example:

• Using Gallery View is a terrific way to sit around the virtual dining room table and reminisce about past events – providing togetherness conversations.

• Using Speaker View provides an individual to share what they’re feeling or a thought.

• Using Speaker View can be further utilized to share a photo and have the individual or all on the call talk about that image memory.

Q. What can people do to make sure everyone is staying engaged with a Zoom gathering?

A. Within the Family Activities section, https://www.vivid-pix.com/family-activity-videos, we’ve described how individuals and groups can connect.

Example activities include:

• Family History Interviews – where individuals are engaged to share a story, a recipe, and a host of other things.

• Time Capsules Creation – is a great way to keep young and young-at-heart engaged in the conversation – a moderator can “go around the table” to ask important questions and individuals can share their feelings.

• Scheduling Events – sharing recipes during meal preparation, sharing meals, opening presents, and even virtual happy hours!

Q. What are some activities for people to enjoy remotely?

A. The activities that individuals and groups can do remotely are literally endless!

• One example on the site illustrates “Family History Jeopardy.”

• Another example illustrates a fashion show conducted while together – but can be adapted to Sharing the “new sweater” or outfit that someone just received as a gift.

• Reminiscing of past events and talking about those no longer with us – planning for a time when we can all be together again – and of course, photographs are great prompts to our memories.
