Consumer Critique - The Dead Sea Squirrels

My younger kid loves squirrels, so it's always fun to check something squirrel-related out! In this case, the Dead Sea Squirrels name comes from the Dead Sea Scrolls, with a fun way to learn about Biblical values, and follows a couple formerly petrified squirrels who have been revived and share their firsthand knowledge about the Bible.

Dead Sea Squirrels come from Mike Nawrocki, co-creator of the VeggieTales series. The series (both video and book) uses humor and imaginative storytelling to share lessons in a fun way. Themes include kindness, diligence, honesty, mercy, self-control, overcoming worry, trusting God, Jesus’ birth, baptism, the Kingdom of God, the Last Supper and the Resurrection.

The soundtrack, now available for streaming, provides a way to listen to the songs from the series and reinforce lessons while listening to positive music. Movie Minute - Just One More

We've all had that moment when we reach the end of our rope - when we're just so tired we want to quit. Just One More is a story about what happens when someone makes a decision to keep going anyway, in spite of that discouragement.

Jess, a recovering addict, is battling shame and doubt. Charles is dying, and prays that God would use him just one more time. Their stories intersect, and Jess learns to find forgiveness, healing, and hope.

This movie weaves together themes of reconciliation, perseverance, and strength. It's a positive, uplifting movie that is appropriate for families with older kids (because of the themes of addiction) that can be a powerful way to start discussions about purpose and strength.

Soul Sustenance - NKJV New Testament, Tracing Edition

I recently had a chance to see a copy of the NKJV New Testament, Tracing Edition. It's a great idea, honestly - I have always told my students that writing is a much stronger way to commit things to memory than just reading. It's true for German and math (my two main subjects), and it's also true for pretty much anything else. This edition is designed to encourage deeper meditation on Scripture by tracing the words.

The type is a little larger than a traditional Bible, which makes it easier to trace (and also easier to read). It's a handwriting-style font that is enjoyable to follow, and was easy even for me with my terrible handwriting to trace over. There are wide margins, perfect for additional notes (or, if you're artistic like my daughter, for art inspired by the verses). It also lays flat, which means it works for left- or right-handed writers.

The reading plans are also helpful, offering a themed way to dive deeper into the New Testament.

Consumer Critique - Explorer Bible Dictionary for Kids

The Bible can be full of a lot of challenging terms for kids (and adults). The Explorer Bible Dictionary for Kids, along with other kid-friendly study tools such as the Explorer Bible for Kids, aims to help demystify some of the terms, figures, and locations found in the Bible. By using a Bible and study resources designed for them, kids can get more engaged and excited in reading and learning more about Scripture.

I had a chance to see a copy of the dictionary, and I really liked it. It's bright enough, with enough pictures, to be engaging for early elementary readers, but it's also detailed and deep enough for older elementary and even middle school readers. Terms and names are clearly identified, and cover some of the more well-known to some of the more obscure. It helps to set the context for Bible stories and deepen understanding.

Soul Sustenance - She Reads Truth Spiral-Bound Notetaking Bible

I love reviewing and seeing different Bibles, so I was happy to review the She Reads Truth Spiral-Bound Notetaking Bible. This Bible has a lot of great features that make it perfect for those who like to take notes.

First of all, the Bible is big. It's easy to read, with ample room for note-taking. The spiral binding makes it lay flat like a notebook, which makes it more comfortable for writing (due to its size, its split into several volumes, for example, the New Testament in one volume). Key verses are highlighted with beautiful full-page illustrations, and each book has a brief introduction to set the context for the book.

The Bible includes reading logs and helpful study tools like maps and timelines. I also really appreciate that it's feminine but not girly, pretty but still kind of minimalist. It also provides community with other women.

Fun Freetime - A Week Away on Angel Studios

 A Week Away, currently available on Angel, is a show that will keep your whole family entertained. Targeted towards teens and young adults, but with energy and clean humor, everyone can enjoy this musical entertainment.

The series follows teens at Camp Aweegaway. Viewers will explore themes like trust, self-discovery, and friendship. The main character is a foster teen who goes reluctantly and somewhat defiantly to a Christian camp, doubting the hollow promises of faith. While the series has an obviously Christian message, it isn't preachy. The desire to belong and the pain of grief and longing will resonate with many viewers, especially those struggling to find their purpose.
