Cool Crafts - Finding Online Community

New research reveals shocking information about how quilters are building community – with 46% of quilters researching quilting education and connection daily.
It’s time to recognize the impact technology has had on the crafting industry.

“Are the days of quilting circles behind us? Or are quilting communities expanding over an online space? Nearly half of quilters turn to the internet for quilting support and information on a daily basis, which tells us how global the quilting community really has become,” says Corey Pearson, Master Quilter and VP of Customer Success at Linda’s Electric Quilters
Through online spaces quilters can find new patterns, better equipment, and like-minded friends.

“With these resources available to us, quilters can expand their knowledge, creativity, and resources, allowing them to perfect and individualize their craft. This shows us that the days of quilting circles are not behind us; rather, they are just taking to the digital world instead,” he says.

I had a chance to learn more in this interview.

Why is it important for quilters to find community?
Finding community is essential for quilters because it provides a sense of belonging and support. Quilting, often a solitary activity, can benefit from the shared experiences and knowledge that a community offers. Being part of a quilting group allows individuals to exchange tips, learn new techniques, and gain inspiration from others’ projects. This social interaction also helps quilters stay motivated and passionate about their craft, fostering both personal and artistic growth."

How can online resources and communities provide an alternative to quilting circles, if people can't find any nearby?
Online resources and communities offer a valuable alternative to traditional quilting circles, especially for those who can't find local groups. Virtual forums, social media groups, and dedicated quilting websites allow quilters to connect with others from around the world. These platforms provide access to tutorials, patterns, and advice, enabling quilters to share their work and receive feedback. The digital space creates a flexible and accessible environment where quilters can engage with a supportive community at any time.

How can quilters and other crafters leverage online and face-to-face communities to find support and ideas?
Quilters and crafters can leverage both online and face-to-face communities to enhance their creative journey. Online platforms like forums, social media, and video tutorials offer vast resources and a broad network of fellow crafters. These virtual spaces provide immediate access to advice, inspiration, and collaboration opportunities. Meanwhile, face-to-face communities, such as local quilting clubs or workshops, offer hands-on learning experiences and deeper personal connections. By participating in both, crafters can enjoy a well-rounded support system that fosters continuous learning and creative exchange.
