If you have kids that love computer games, but can't afford to buy many, there are a ton of downloadable or online games.
Acclaim Downloadable Games
Online multiplayer games are also a good option - for kids of certain ages. Some sites come with built-in parental controls; others should only be played by kids mature enough to handle the environments. Here is my experience with some of them - if you have more to add, let me know and they'll be listed! All of the games can be played for free, but there are additional options for those who want to spend the money.
Runescape - This one is pretty well known. Players complete quests in an online fantasy world. Public chat can be disabled (which is a good option, even for me as an adult). I enjoyed it, but I just don't have the time for it anymore.
Ogame - Players create empires of planets. It is helpful to be in an alliance. I still play this one, and am part of an alliance (FrTC - Friends through Courage) that maintains strong ethical standards with its messages and forums (mutual support, clean language, etc).
Pirates of the Caribbean - Sponsored by Disney, based on the movie.
This is a great review of several other online games
