Are your kids bored with the games they have? Encourage them to make up new rules for old games, or look around for other ideas of house rules. A search for "Monopoly" and "house rules," for example, turns up hundreds of sites, each with dozens of variations.
Need ideas to get started? Here are some for a variety of classic games:
Uno
If one player lays a draw 2, the next player can get out of drawing by laying their own draw 2 card. The following player would then need to draw 4 (or 6, or 8, depending on how many draw 2 cards have been laid).
If a player can lay the exact same card that the previous player laid down, they can go again. Example: Jack lays down a green 3. Sue lays down a green 3. Sue can then play a second card if she chooses.
Scrable
Bonus squares always count - so if someone adds a letter to a word covering a bonus square, they can still get bonus points.
Language learning rule - mix sets from two languages of Scrabble together. Words from either language may be used.
If the blank tile has been played, you can substitute a letter for it, then take the tile if you'll use it in that turn. Example: Jack plays oxe_ to make oxen. Sue places an n in for the blank tile and uses it in her own word that turn.
