Tuesday Time Tidbits: Clutter

Any house is going to develop clutter. There are two big ways to help save time and keep the clutter to a minimum. Some of you may already be doing this, and if you aren't give it a try and see what happens.

1) Straighten up as you go. It's much easier and quicker to take five minutes or so to put away shoes and hang up jackets than it is to spend an hour at the end of the week. Plus, if the house is less cluttered, it will be less tempting for household members to make the problem worse. It's psychological: if you see a mess, you're less likely to put other things away. Stay on top of the mess in chunks and you'll have less of it.

2) Have centralized locations for the clutter. Inevitably, things will end up where they don't belong. Designate a bin, basket, or drawer as a "catch-all" for things that end up in the wrong area of the house. This should be the first place to look for "lost" items. Once a week, start at one end of the house with a bin, grabbing everything that doesn't belong in that room and putting it into the bin. As you go through the house, put items back where they belong.
