What to do when you and your child have to wait, and you don't have toys on hand? Try these tips!
Grocery store:
Pick a letter and point out things that start with that letter
Pick a color and have your child tell you whenever you pick up something with that color. Have him or her guess how many things of that color will be in your cart at the end.
Doctor's office:
Bring crayons and draw on the exam room table paper.
Have your child carry a cotton ball across the room on the tongue depressor (ask for supplies from the nurse as you go in).
Restaurant:
Play tic-tac-toe using silverware and sugar packets.
Guess what color the next person to come through the door will be wearing.
Use the menu for math games.
Play peekaboo through a water glass.
Let your baby or toddler play with ice cubes on their trays.
On a plane:
Put coins in a water bottle and shake.
Use trail mix or pretzel packets to crinkle and shake for your baby.
Take turns hiding a picture torn from a magazine someplace within reach.
In line:
Talk to your child about the pocket change you find in your purse.
Have your child try to make different shapes and letters or numbers with his fingers and arms.
