As parents, we have lots of things with batteries - cameras, kids' toys, flashlights, and more. To reduce the environmental impact of all of those, consider rechargeable batteries. Even though they eventually lose their charge (and some claim that they don't last any longer than alkalines - see here to read this and other battery myths), they can be recycled, unlike alkaline batteries, which have very limited recycling centers.
The biggest drawback of rechargeable batteries is that you won't see as many coupons for them. However, you will have to buy fewer batteries, which means money saved. We got a universal charger from Energizer. You can get just a AA/AAA charger for cheaper, but since we use D, AAA, and 9-volt batteries, the universal made more sense. The universal chargers run about $25-$30; AA chargers are about $10-$20
