Fun Freetime: New Moon Girls

This week's edition of Fun Freetime is a little bit specialized to tween girls. I received an email from the founder of New Moon Girls. The website's goal is to provide a safe online environment for girls to explore their own creativity. There is also a magazine committed to providing healthy messages that support girls' self-esteem.

From the website:
New Moon Girl Media's mission is to help girls, ages 8 to 15, discover their unique voices and express them in the world in ways that matter.

We fulfill our mission by keeping girls at our center. Through active girl involvement and participation in all our business decisions, we provide respectful, creative, energetic and safe communities where girls explore, discover, create, grow and share their voices to make a positive difference in their lives and in the world.

The website is not free. It costs $19.95 a year to join. Magazine subscription is $34.95. Both together are $44.95. The website offers interaction via polls, a fully moderated chat (an adult staff member is always present), and shout outs; places to post poetry, art, video, and music; and ways to ask for advice. There are also sections for book reviews, mentoring younger girls, arts and culture, features of women and girls changing the world, emotional and physical issues, and science and math fun.

The magazine includes a section for strong female role models, international cultures, career women, historical women, information about changing bodies, inspirational messages, and a variety of female-friendly articles devoted to healthy self-images.

If you have a girl in the tween and early teen years, go check it out!
