No parent likes to have to say no all the time. But giving in to kids all the time isn't good either. Here are some ways to teach your child patience while working towards getting something he or she wants.
- Keep a wish list on hand. If your kids see something, it goes on the list. When Christmas and birthdays come around, ask them if they still want it (this prevents kids from deciding they want a toy one day and forgetting all about it the next).
- Use things as rewards. For younger children, a token reward system can be effective for teaching appropriate behavior. If they want something, they know they need to follow the rules to get it.
- If it's not a birthday or Christmas, have the kids use their own money. Either give them a monthly budget for things they want while you're shopping, or give them an allowance (which can be used for a whole host of other teaching moments). Then you aren't saying no; they're making their own choices.
