If you do a lot of mailing (or receive a lot) you know how much packaging takes up space. Imagine it all in our landfills! Here are some tips to reduce the impact of packaging on our planet:
- Reuse packing materials whenever possible. If you get an overload, list them on Craigslist or Freecycle. There are always people moving who need to pack boxes.
- Some packaging stores, like UPS, will take back packing materials to reuse.
- Visit Plastic Loose Fill Council to find other drop-off sites for recycling.
- For Expanded Polystyrene (Styrofoam) that is shaped and not suitable for dropping off at packaging stores, try the Alliance of Foam Packaging Recyclers.
- Use biodegradable packing peanuts (made from cornstarch).
- If your community recycles plastic bags, you can often recycle the big bubble wrap (the kind that looks like several pillows) with that.
- Use easily-recyclable (and free) alternatives, like crumpled newspaper, shredded paper, etc.
