August is National Get a Will Month. Even if you don't have many assets, it is still important to get a will to protect the people you would normally name as heirs. Many people delay (I know I did) because the fee for an attorney is so expensive. However, one website, LegalZoom, offers wills started at only $69 (there are other websites as well, but this is the one I just used, so it is obviously the easiest to spotlight).
The process of getting the will set up was extremely easy. I needed to answer questions about my primary and alternate heirs, trustees, and personal representatives. The whole process took about ten minutes. I had the option to have rush shipping (an extra $17) or standard ($3). I also could list any special requests for funeral arrangements and the like. The $69 fee includes a hard copy of the will, notary public acknowledgement, self-proving affidavit, property worksheet booklet to help you organize your property, and a newsletter that will include notifications to any updates in relevant laws. There is a $99 option that also includes free revisions for a year (the $69 option only includes revisions for 30 days), and a premium option at $119 that also includes same-day preparation and storage.
LegalZoom's website includes a wide variety of other services too, including small business legal documents (such as LLC and partnership agreements), living trusts, powers of attorney, trademarks and patents, divorce, name change, bankruptcy, and more.
If you haven't got your will written up yet, then do it! You never know what might happen, and it's better to have it and not have to worry about it anymore.
