If you're in a house with a fridge over 15 years old, you should strongly consider saving up for a more energy-efficient type. No matter how old or new your fridge is though, make sure that you are keeping it running at its peak performance.
- Keep your fridge and freezer mostly full (packed to the gills doesn't let the cold air circulate, but the more cold objects that are in the fridge, the more efficiently it will recover from the door opening).
- It seems like a no-brainer, but keep the door closed as much as possible. Even if you're only grabbing milk to pour a glass and you're standing right there with the glass, shut it. The longer it's open, the more cold air gets out.
- Clean the coils twice a year using a fridge brush or small attachment on your vacuum.
- Check the door gaskets and replace them if needed. Put a dollar bill between the gasket and the fridge and see if you can pull it out when the door is closed. If so, the gasket needs to be replaced.
