Parent's Choice formula would like me to pass on some information about changes to the WIC program. The changes are designed to promote breastfeeding - which I personally think is great, but may have a negative impact on some WIC users. Exclusively breastfeeding mothers won't be able to get supplemental formula. Those who partially or fully formula feed their babies will get less formula. The funds that previously went to formula will be re-allocated to other areas of the program, which means that those families will be able to get more money's worth of other food supplies.
I honestly don't know how I feel about this. I'm very pro-breastfeeding, but realize that there are plenty of good mothers who can't breastfeed, for whatever reason. Although an exclusively breastfeeding mother may not need any supplemental formula, some might. However, it would be nice for those who wouldn't use that option to be able to purchase more in other areas of nutrition instead. New food packages will include more options for fruits and vegetables, and will also allow state agencies some flexibility to approve other foods such as brown rice, soy beverages, tortillas, and more.
Overall, I think the changes are good. It encourages more eating of produce, and reduces the fat content compared to previous packages. It will negatively impact those who rely on the formula, however.
To help you save money on formula, if you need it to supplement or are formula-feeding, Parent's Choice has a baby formula savings calculator. As a reminder, all store brand formulas have to meet the dietary guidelines set forth by the FDA, and maintain quality guidelines as well.
