I honestly don't know how I feel about this. I'm very pro-breastfeeding, but realize that there are plenty of good mothers who can't breastfeed, for whatever reason. Although an exclusively breastfeeding mother may not need any supplemental formula, some might. However, it would be nice for those who wouldn't use that option to be able to purchase more in other areas of nutrition instead. New food packages will include more options for fruits and vegetables, and will also allow state agencies some flexibility to approve other foods such as brown rice, soy beverages, tortillas, and more.
Overall, I think the changes are good. It encourages more eating of produce, and reduces the fat content compared to previous packages. It will negatively impact those who rely on the formula, however.
To help you save money on formula, if you need it to supplement or are formula-feeding, Parent's Choice has a baby formula savings calculator. As a reminder, all store brand formulas have to meet the dietary guidelines set forth by the FDA, and maintain quality guidelines as well.
