There are some easy tips you can follow to help keep your oven as efficient as possible.
- Don't preheat. Cakes and pastries need it, but other things, like pizzas, meats, and entrees, don't.
- Don't open the oven while baking if possible. It contributes to heat loss. Try using the light/window instead.
- Turn the oven off a few minutes early. The heat inside the oven will keep cooking the food.
- Use the right-sized pot. If you have electric burners, don't put a little pot on the big burner.
- Do double-duty. If you're baking pizza, whip up a batch of cookies too, as long as the oven is hot anyway.
- Use a toaster oven. Toaster ovens heat a much smaller volume of air, making them very efficient for small jobs. Plus, on hot days, they don't release as much heat into the kitchen.
