Consumer Critique: Munchkin Math

I recently had the opportunity to try out Munchkin Math, a program designed to enhance early math skills. I got the Telling Time DVD, designed for kids 2-9. The other DVDs focus on shapes and money. They are interactive DVDs, which means that they encourage your kids to not just sit and watch but to also answer prompts and participate. The company states it uses auditory, visual, and kinesthetic learning styles. Auditory and visual are kind of givens for DVDs, and as long as parents encourage kids to participate along, it can be effective for kids who learn by doing too. My daughter is 2, but she still picked the concepts up. I raise her bilingual German-English, so I say things in German as the movie says things in English, and she has no problem transferring the concepts between languages. It was also very attention-grabbing for a little child, although results may vary with older children and their attention.

“I wrote this review while participating in a blog campaign by Mom Central on behalf of Munchkin Math and received a sample DVD to facilitate my candid review. Mom Central sent me a gift card to thank me for taking the time to participate.”
