Parenting Pointers: Tara Gidus

According to a recent survey, 52% of Americans say that recent warm weather has them more motivated to get in shape for summer, but 21% of Americans say that they do not know where to begin. Healthy Choice partnered with registered dietitian Tara Gidus to offer suggestions on how to shape up for summer by following a few simple tips this spring:
- Don’t make excuses. According to a recent survey, being too busy is an obstacle to eating healthy, with nearly one out of three people having too many social events (30%) or not having the time to prepare healthy meals or snacks (29%).
- Healthy Choice meals are simple ways to stay on track to a healthy lifestyle without taking up a chunk of your day. Meals can be made in little time with just the help of a microwave, perfect for making a healthy lunch or dinner in a time crunch.
- Eat light and eat often. Eat only what you need to sustain yourself for three or four hours then follow up with a light snack to tide you over until the next meal or snack.
- Healthy Choice frozen entrées are low in calories and satisfy your craving for health and convenience with new varieties that feature whole grains, protein and fiber, which is a perfect way to keep you full and satisfied.
- Healthy Choice Soups are another great way to stay full and on track. Each variety is made with quality ingredients like garden variety vegetables, herbs, spices and tender chunks of meat.
- Shrink your plate and your waist will follow. Eating from a smaller plate will help control portions while you will still think you had a plate full of food.
- Controlling your portions can help prevent mindless eating and weight gain. Healthy Choice meals are perfectly portioned to provide delicious, calorie controlled, nutrient-dense meals to help you stay on track for a healthy lifestyle.
- Color your plate. Fruits and veggies are colorful and add nutritional value to every meal without adding extra calories.
- Healthy Choice All Natural Entrées feature contemporary, chef-created recipes and a variety of vegetarian options for consumers looking to eat more veggies on a day-to-day basis.
- Healthy Choice All Natural Entrées start with premium all natural ingredients like extra virgin olive oil, whole grains, pumpkin, red peppers and zucchini to create delicious, nutritious meals made with no preservatives, artificial flavors or colors.
- All Healthy Choice Complete Meals have a full serving of vegetables and a real fruit dessert, and are also a good source of fiber and an excellent source of protein.
- S-L-O-W D-O-W-N. Food is meant to be enjoyed, so slow down and taste every bite. Take sips of water and put your fork down throughout the meal to remind yourself to slow down.
- Track your spending. Not dollars, but calories. People who keep a record of what they eat lose twice as much weight as people who don’t.
- Save dough by eating at home. Restaurant meals can have high calories along with high prices. Cook at home to save time, money and fuel or bring lunch to work for even more cost savings.
- Spend less time in the kitchen and more time with your family with easy to prepare Healthy Choice meals. Instead of ordering takeout or heading to a restaurant, try Healthy Choice Café Steamers. With varieties like General Tso’s Spicy Chicken or Roasted Chicken Marsala, you can enjoy a great meal without the added cost and calories.
Healthy Choice Fresh Mixers and Soups require no freezing or refrigeration – making them a perfect option to bring to the office and leave at your desk for a quick and healthy lunch.
- Don’t compromise on summer cravings. Instead of completely cutting yourself off from foods you love, look for simple ways to make them healthier.
- Summertime means ice cream, but not all ice cream has to be loaded with calories. Healthy Choice has a line of frozen desserts that range from 80 – 150 calories in great flavors like Fudge Bars, Ice Cream Sandwiches and Sorbet & Cream bars.
- The kids are in sports, why not you? Join a tennis, rowing or racquetball league. You will have fun, get fit and socialize at the same time!
- Make it a family affair. Take the whole family out for a walk or a bike ride after dinner to enjoy the summer evenings.
- Move a bit more. Go for a 15 minute walk during your lunch break, walk up and down the stairs a few times, pace while you are on the phone or get off the subway a stop or two early and walk the rest of the way.
- Need an energy break? Move major muscle groups instead of reaching for a cup of joe. Do a set of lunges right near your desk and feel the oxygen pulse through your veins, supplying energy to your brain. A natural pick-me-up that is better than coffee!
- Get enough sleep! Not having enough sleep can throw off your hormone balance and contribute to gaining weight.
- Rise and shine. Breakfast is a no-brainer to kick start your day. Feel more energetic and fuel your brain by simply giving your body the food it desires.
- Fight back. Foods like whole grains, fruits, vegetables and yogurt contain nutrients and substances that can boost your immune system to fight off pesky germs that can make you sick. Healthy Choice entrées are filled with protein, fiber and whole grains, all key elements to promote heart and digestive health.
- Drink up! Just a small amount of dehydration can leave you feeling sluggish, cause a headache or make you feel hungry. Women need about nine cups of fluids a day from food, water and other beverages and men need about 13 cups.
