- Try to avoid using pesticides to kill weeds. Spray them with white vinegar, smother with mulch, or douse with boiling water. Pesticides can leave toxic residues that can either drift into your house, or be absorbed through kids' and pets' skin. I've used the vinegar method with pretty good success. Elbow grease also works well - just pull them out, roots and all.
- Sprinkle red chili powder, paprika or dried peppermint where ants are entering the house; or mix 1/2 cup of soap in a gallon of water and spray around your foundation.
