World Wisdom: Head Lice

Did you know there are natural solutions for getting rid of head lice? Obviously, prevention is great (by not sharing hats and combs), but if your kid (or you) get them, you do have options.

You can try combing them out with a special comb. You'd need to comb carefully for 3 weeks to make sure to get them out.

You can also do a hot-air method called the Lousebuster, which uses heat to dry everything out in 30 minutes. This can only be done by a trained professional to make sure it's done accurately.

Another option is smothering, which needs to be done three times in two weeks. The scalp and hair need to be saturated, then dried with a hair dryer, left in overnight, and then washed out. You can try petroleum jelly, mayo, olive oil, essential oils, or over-the-counter natural products designed to work this way. Check with your pediatrician to make sure you're doing it safely.
