Motherhood Moment: Food Transitions

My daughter's "food face" for the first 6 months of eating baby food.
My girls are weird when it comes to food. I have no idea why. I know part of it is that I'm a slacker when it comes to introducing solids, so they don't get a lot of early experience. But even when I do, they're very resistant.

My oldest ate nothing whatsoever besides breastmilk and the very occasional cereal or applesauce until she was 12 months old (she would get her "food face" and usually clamp her lips shut when she saw the spoon), then only ate cereal, applesauce, and yogurt until about 15 months. She wouldn't take anything except the finest purees for a few months after that, and was over 18 months before she was "good" at table food.

"Self-feeding" right off the bat.
My younger daughter, however, does at least take spoon food. We thought she'd be very different, since the first day we started feeding her she grabbed the spoon and started feeding herself. But when it comes to texture, she is just now getting the hang of it, and really doesn't do finger foods well - and she's almost 13 months!

I was so glad I received the Infantino Annabel Karmel Baby Food Mill (affiliate link) when I did - so that I could puree foods more smoothly than I could with a hand blender or fork. It's really easy to use!

I do strongly recommend making your own baby food, too. It's really not that hard - with hand blenders and food mills, it's pretty easy to get the fine consistency babies need. Plus, then you know exactly what's going into it, and the baby gets fresh food. You can just toss in whatever you're having for dinner, and your baby gets the same tastes you do!

Disclosure: “I am a participant in a Mom Central Consulting campaign for Infantino and have received various Infantino products as part of my participation.”
