Parenting Pointers: Dressing in Layers

Here in Minnesota, it gets really cold in the winter. Homes and business are obviously heated - sometimes too much, I think. So it's important to wear clothes that will keep us warm outside, but can be adjusted for the varying temperatures in different places. Layering helps - if you're wearing layers, it's easy to take off or add on layers. Plus, layers actually keep you warmer than wearing one big thick shirt, since they act as extra insulation.

In spite of wearing all these extra layers, we still like to look stylish. So I'd like to share some tips for layering and still appearing fashionable.

1) Think thin. Thin layers will fit under regular fashions, so you can add warmth without changing a bit of your style.
2) Invest in a few high-quality pieces, like sweater jackets in go-with-anything colors (black, white, grey, neutral). These can be used over a variety of different colored shirts to change the look.
3) Use accessories. Larger earrings and chunky necklaces can complement thick layers and add some pizzazz.
4) Use winter wear as accessories. Scarves and hats can match outfits and keep you warmer when you're running short errands where you don't quite need a jacket.
5) Use multiple identical pieces. Wearing more than one thin long-sleeved tee or tank keeps you even warmer, doesn't add a lot of bulk, and provides for a little extra color.
6) Be sure to match! This seems common sense, but you want any turtlenecks you wear to complement the sweater. Don't mix prints; stick with a solid of one and print of another.
7) Too much matching can look silly. Don't dress head-to-toe in the same color when you're out and about, even if your sweatshirt and sweatpants are the warmest thing you have.
8) Don't be afraid of skirts when it's cold. Instead of nylons, use stockings or leggings.
9) Vest jackets can look sharp and still keep you warm. Some are as thick and warm as winter jackets, and other are just single fleece layers, but matched with the layers you're wearing underneath can help you be comfortable and put-together.
10) Safety first. Don't sacrifice your health (and risk frostbite) just for the sake of fashion!
Don't be afraid of layers. You won't look like an overstuffed snowman, and you will stay warm! Many times you can layer with things you already have - and trust me, it will keep you warmer than just wearing a sweater. You can also look for clothing designed for layering, such as CuddlDuds.
