1. Get cozy seats. We don’t need to fly first class to get extra leg room and wide seats. There are secrets to moving up in comfort without moving up in price. Most airlines have certain roomier economy rows. Before you book a flight, check out sites like SeatGuru.com and SeatExperts.com to compare seat dimensions and other on-board amenities.
2. Skip checking bags. Most airlines now charge between $15 and $20 to check a suitcase, which could run you hundreds of dollars during the season. Carry-ons can be the smarter and cheaper way to go, and if you pack smart, you can fit everything you need in a standard 45-inch carry-on bag, which is a size most airlines allow.
3. Pack multi-tasking items. It’s amazing how creative you can be with simple wardrobe basics to maximize the wardrobe mileage of a few simple pieces. An over-sized shawl can double as a blanket or pillow on the plane, a sarong on the beach, a halter paired with jeans for a night out and - of course - a shawl or scarf. Some other favorite closet transformers: long chain necklaces can double as a belt or multi-strand bracelet. And black leggings can work for day, evening or the gym.
4. Go for minis. Rather than packing full-size beauty products, which can spill and take up too much room, bring sample sizes. Drugstores usually have dollar bins with mini shampoos, hand creams and deodorants, and companies like LancĂ´me and Kiehl’s give away deluxe samples at their stores. If you can’t track down mini-me sizes, decant them into little bottles, which you can buy at most drugstores and beauty supply shops It sounds time-consuming, but it’s worth it to have your self-tanner, face cream, SPF, face mask and hair care in worry-free convenient spill-proof bottles.
5. Prevent wrinkling. Pack garments made out of creaseless fabrics like stretchy jersey and cashmere. Instead of folding your clothes, which can create wrinkles and creases, roll them up. No matter how tropical your destination, avoid easily wrinkled fabrics like linen and wool. My husband and I don’t leave home without a travel steamer, which can get garments from suitcase drab to flawless and fab in 5 minutes. In a pinch, you can remove soft creases by steaming a garment in a steamy hotel bathroom.
6. Accessorize wisely. If you switch up your necklaces, bangles and earrings, you can create completely different outfits. Pack lots of colorful options and otherwise neutral wardrobe pieces. I also like to loop necklaces around my wrists to create multi-stranded bracelets.
7. Stay energized. The hustle and bustle can take a toll on us if we don’t take care of ourselves. Stay energized by staying hydrated. Bring a 1 liter bottle of water on your flight, purchased after airport security, of course! And wear a pair of FUTURO Hosiery from 3M. They make stylish and cozy knee-high socks that are good for your health, too. When I wear them, my feet feel refreshed, like they’re getting an in-flight foot massage. It makes perfect sense that if you’re going to wear socks for style, why not wear them for health and comfort, too?
8. Germ-proof your trip. Do not touch. Avoid sitting on or touching anything in the bathroom, and don’t wash your hands. Instead, use a sanitizing wipe when you return to your seat. I’ve heard scary rumors about what’s in airplane water. So avoid ice cubes, too. Grab a tissue to protect your hand when you flush in the loo.
9. Pack in pouches. I’m a staunch believer in Ziploc bags. I even keep one in my purse. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve stained the inside of a great bag with sticky gloss, or gone fishing for a pen only to come out with a lip liner. They also help organize items like jewelry, lingerie, flight documents and snacks.
Futuro Hosiery is made by 3M and comes in five types: Energizing, Revitalizing, Restoring, Therapeutic, and Anti-Embolism. The different types provide different amounts of graduated compression, which can improve circulation, relieve varicose veins, and provide relief for tired legs. Depending on the type, they are available in men's socks, women's trouser socks, or various heights of pantyhose. Futuro Hosiery is available at drugstores and online retailers.
