Healthy Habits: Cravings

Got cravings? Before you give in, be sure to ask yourself if you're really hungry. Wait a few minutes (while thinking about something else) before you decide. Make sure you're well-hydrated. Have a glass of water and wait for 15-20 minutes to see if you're still hungry. And decide if you'll savor the food, or feel guilty. If you'll feel guilty, then pass on the cravings. Make sure you aren't skipping meals, and consider keeping a food journal - having to write everything down will make you think twice about everything. Regular exercise and sleep will also help you out.

Distractions work too, like talking to a friend, pampering yourself for a little bit (facials, painting our nails), going for a walk, or doing some little project.

When you do decide that you are really hungry, then make sure it's not just a grab-and-run. Eat some healthy, low-calorie snacks like fruits or veggies first, and whatever you eat, put it on a plate or in a bowl, and don't eat while you're doing something else - really focus on what you're eating.
