Sprint has a new Sprint Total Equipment Protection App available for Android, Blackberry, and certain feature phones that will allow you to locate the phone on a map using GPS, sync contacts, perform a remote wipe of phone to clear data, lock the phone, and sound an alarm to help you find a misplaced phone nearby. Current Sprint customers can have the TEP app running in just a few minutes - with no additional cost.
I lost my phone once. This was really sad for me since I had a lot of pictures I hadn't downloaded to my computer yet. Luckily I remembered where I was and was able to call the store and have them hold it for me, but it could have been worse. A lot of people keep a great deal of information in their phone, so the ability to wipe the data or lock the phone remotely would be handy to keep it private.
Even if you didn't enroll in TEP the first month you had your phone, you can still get this app. There's open enrollment until August 30, 2011, so any Sprint customer can take advantage of this limited time offer to get the app, and the other features of the replacement plan - a quick and easy way to receive a replacement if your phone is ever lost, stolen, damaged or malfunctions after the warranty expires. It even covers accidents like dropping your phone in a lake. The cost is $8/month. There's a deductible of either $50 or $100, but that's a lot lower than the non-contract price of a phone (since that's the phone you pay if you need to get a new phone before your contract is up).
