Do you have a child involved in the Boy Scouts of America? I don't have boys (and my girls are too young anyway) but my next-door neighbor is a Boy Scout and his dad does a lot of volunteering with the troop. Scouting can be a great experience for a wide variety of kids. Being in a troop can provide a social outlet outside of school for kids that might be having difficulties in school. It can also improve confidence and give him educational opportunities he might not get in school. Scouting encourages a healthy lifestyle by providing nutrition education and physically active things to do.
Scouting has also changed with the times. Scouts can earn 31 different merit badges, which now include a Robotics merit badge and curriculum that includes STEM education (science, technology, engineering, math). It also strives to get the family involved in various experiences and activities to help strengthen relationships among family members.
Even if you only have girls, they can still experience some of what scouting has to offer. Boy Scouts of America offers the Venturers program, a co-ed program for teens and young adults ages 14-20 that provides a wealth of experience and adventure.
