Did you know that this September is the first ever National Bed Bug Awareness Month? It kind of makes me wonder how one gets a "national month" for a topic...In this case, it was declared by BedBug Central
Recently, the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) and the University of Kentucky conducted a survey, 2011 Bugs Without Borders Survey, that reported that that bed bug infestations have increased and are now being found just about everywhere. The study, which surveyed U.S. pest management professionals, found that bed bug infestations are increasing in truly revolting ways in the last year:
- College dorms: 54% compared with 35% the year before
- Hotels: 80% compared with 67% from 2010
- Schools and day cares: 26%, up from 10%
That's kind of scary. There are ways you can help protect yourself from bedbugs. If you're traveling or at home, know the signs of an infestation - shed skins, spots on the sheets from where bugs may be crushed. Often times these won't be easily apparent, especially in hotels, so another good idea is to use the luggage racks, tables, or dressers instead of the floor. Also, wash all clothing when you return home, and inspect suitcases before bringing them into the house.
If you do discover an infestation, there are a lot of products out there, including Stop Bugging Me, which is a natural option, safe for kids and pets. Most experts recommend an integrated pest management solution, which includes using heat or cold to kill bedbugs that are visible, and using some sort of residual treatment to kill those bedbugs that are hidden.
