Healthy Habits: Thyroid Awareness

January is Thyroid Awareness Month and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) is raising awareness for thyroid disease by launching a new awareness ribbon. The blue paisley ribbon contains curved shapes that mimic thyroid follicles. Additionally, paisley is often used in ties and scarves, which are tied around the neck, where the thyroid is located.

Thyroid disease is a fact of life for as many as 30 million Americans, making it more common than diabetes or heart disease – and did you know that women are 5 more times likely than men to suffer from hypothyroidism? Untreated thyroid conditions can contribute to miscarriages or make it harder to become pregnant, and can also affect energy levels, along with other symptoms. I encourage you to visit the site and familiarize yourself with some conditions associated with this often-overlooked but very important gland.
