Parenting Pointers: Bullying Resources

Bullying is a serious issue. People of all ages can be bullied, physically, verbally, and even over the Internet. And it can really take a toll on a person's self-esteem.

There's a new film, The Fat Boy Chronicles, that explores the issue of bullying. It is inspired by the true story of a boy who was bullied and found strength to focus on his goals. It also contains bullying prevention information from the International Bullying Prevention Association. It's Dove Family Approved, won a film festival award, and has also been endorsed as a teaching tool for the classroom.

I can see why. It's informative, emotive, and really well done in a family-friendly way. I can't say I enjoyed watching a lot of it - parts of it made me uncomfortable, especially since I experienced bullying when I was younger. I think it's actually well worth watching before your kids get to an age where bullying is a big problem, because it can help start a dialogue to give them tools to cope with bullying, and reasons why they shouldn't be a bully.

If you need resources, an excellent place to go is Stopbullying.gov. This site has a wealth of tips for kids, teens, young adults, parents, and educators. It looks at cyberbullying, LGBT bullying, and recognizing warning signs, plus it has a series of webisodes that can give your kids examples of how to stand up to bullying.

Disclosure: I received a copy of Fat Boy Chronicles to facilitate this review.
