Storms can be scary whether it is the lightening or the deep sounds of thunder. The unfamiliar noises, the constant weather alerts going off and dark skies are a dangerous combination for children. There are several ways to help your children through a storm:
Prepare before the storm: If you think a storm is brewing, check out your local weather news and pin point the details like what is expected, for how long and the severity of it. Getting all the details will prepare you for a possible kid meltdown when that first thunder rolls in. Have flashlights, candles, snacks, pillows and any other comfort items ready in case of an emergency. If you think your child can handle it, give them a heads up and keep it light, like it’s no big deal.
Your reaction: How Mom and Dad react will affect your child’s reaction to the storm. If there is dangerous weather approaching do not let the kids know you are worried or nervous yourself. Fearing possible flooding, loss of power or a tornado is a legitimate concern, but in order to keep the kids from worrying and panicking keep a straight face. So remember to keep cool and calm, no matter the situation.
Make it fun: If the power goes out, offer a game of flash light tag or shadow puppets. Safely light some candles and make it a ‘camp out’. Be sure you have pillows, blankets and snacks. If it is just loud thunder and lots of lightening, play a board game to keep their mind off things. Serving them a cup of hot coco or reading to them will help. Make it a rainy day tradition, great memories can be made during these stormy times.
Stick to schedule: If the kids have a certain time they eat or bathe, stick to your routines and schedules. Your children are used to things being a certain way and if you change it up too much it could cause them some nervousness. Going about your day to day life no matter what the situation will show the kids there is nothing to get worked up about.
So next time you see the weather report warning remember to prepare, keep calm, make it fun and stick to normalcy. These tips will save you from meltdowns and hysterics, good luck and happy storming!
