Healthy Habits: Building Healthy Eating Habits

If your diet isn't what it should be, it's hard to make big changes all at once. But there are some tricks you can use to help reprogram your taste buds.

- Do things gradually. If you're used to eating pre-sweetened cereal, mix a sweetened variety with non-sweetened, half and half, and gradually reduce the amount of pre-sweetened (example: apple cinnamon Cheerios with plain).
- Make the texture appealing. The brain likes crunchiness - that's why chips are so addictive. So eat veggies raw, or sprinkle something like sunflower seeds or crushed nuts over other dishes like salads to add a texture sensation.
- A little sugar is ok. If you really have problems eating vegetables, try caramelizing them with just a dash of sugar, which helps release their sweetness. Or try sprinkling a little bit of sugar on tomatoes or cucumbers. There are some naturally sweet veggies, too, like sugar snap peas and sweet corn.
