Parenting Pointers: Children of Alcoholics

Narconon Alcohol Rehab Centers in the East US is releasing a free booklet to families and children of alcoholic parents titled "The Truth About Becoming Addicted - How Good People Lose Control" in honor of Children of Alcoholics week, February 12 to 18, 2012. The National Association of Children of Alcoholic Parents (NACoA) believes that no child of an alcoholic should grow up in isolation and without support. Narconon Alcohol and Drug Prevention and Rehabilitation Centers in the East US share this belief and are doing something about it.

The statistics surrounding children who face alcoholic parents are numerous. SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) reports an estimated 25 percent of all children in the United States or 1 in 4 children, are affected by or exposed to a family alcohol problem.

The NACoA reports that there are an estimated 26.8 million children of alcoholic parents in the United States and preliminary research suggests that over 11 million are under the age of 18.

Anyone struggling with an alcoholic parent or knows of a child struggling with an alcoholic parent can request a free copy of "The Truth About Becoming Addicted - How Good People Lose Control" by emailing info@narcononeastus.org. The booklet also contains phone numbers that family and friends can call confidentially for additional information on interventions and successful rehabilitation programs.

The Narconon alcohol and drug rehabilitation program is unique in that it is an entirely drug-free treatment model that maintains an average 76% success rate. For nearly 50 years, the Narconon substance abuse program has been getting people stably off alcohol and drugs without the use of replacement medications. It uses specifically designed nutritional support to aid in withdraw and detoxification, combined with a sauna detox program and a proven, comprehensive life skills program to handle both the physical and mental aspects of addiction. It is classified as a social education model of rehabilitation, where addicts become "students" of the Narconon life skills curriculum, overcome their addictions and learn to live productive drug-free lives.).
