Consumer Critique: Parenting with Scripture

I was recently asked to review Parenting with Scripture: A Topical Guide for Teachable Moments by Kara Durbin. This book is an updated version of Parenting With Scripture: A Topical Guide for Teachable Moments (2001).

This book is not necessarily what I expected from reading the title. I expected more of a how-to or narrative parenting tips book. Instead, it's something that's almost easier to use and implement. There's a brief introduction, and then the book covers 100 different topics (more if you count the related cross-referenced topics in the index) and provides Bible verses that speak directly to the topic, discussion questions for you and your child, and action items to help a lesson sink in. The book closes with some common Scripture references, such as the Beatitudes and the fruit of the Spirit passages.

I found this book to be a very helpful reference. Instead of just disciplining your child, it provides a way to use misbehavior as a teachable moment. It could also be used as family discussion and devotion time. I definitely plan on recommending this title to the moms in my Bible study group!

Disclosure: I received a complimentary e-book version to facilitate my review.
