Consumer Critique: Trickomatics

I recently found out about the program Trickomatics, a program designed to teach kids math while having fun. Unlike some programs, there are no gimmicks with Trickomatics - they don't just learn shortcuts, but they'll also learn real math skills. The full program is a DVD and interactive CD, so the kids don't just watch the tricks, they practice with them.

The program was developed by a husband and wife team - Rebecca was a teacher who saw kids struggle with math, and her husband Barrett showed her some tricks for how he, as an investment banker, could think in numbers and calculate with ease. The program is designed for kids 7-11, and packages education with fun. Skills covered in the program are place value, mental math, multiplication, problem solving, and word problems - fundamental skills essential for future math (I teach high school math and have a lot of students who still struggle with most of these skills). The program can be incorporated by families to supplement a child's education, as part of a homeschool program, or in schools to help struggling students.

Because I only received a demo, I can't necessarily speak to the success of the program as a whole. But I do think the style of the program is engaging and fun, and worth looking into!

Disclosure: I received a demo to facilitate this review.
