Miracle-Gro® has a new Expand ‘n Gro™ Concentrated Planting Mix. It's concentrated, meaning it will expand up to three times after adding water. The mix provides up to three times the flowers and vegetables compared to native soil alone, and the benefits last, improving soil for multiple years (it does this because milling it into the native soil helps change the soil's bulk density, making the soil have better water holding, moisture distribution, and drainage). The fertilizer feeding benefits last for up to six months. Another unique feature is that it holds more water - up to 50% more - than basic potting soil.

What makes it so unique? The addition of coir fibers. Coir is lightweight and all natural, coming from coconut husk. The long fibers of a husk are used to make ropes, mattresses, and many other products, but 70% of the husk is normally considered a waste by-product. However, they've recently begun to be used as soil amendments, providing the benefits listed above.

Expand n Gro is widely available at lawn and garden retailers in the Midwest, Northeast, and Texas, and at Amazon.com.

I'd love to try this in my garden. It could really be a benefit, especially if we end up with a dry spell - the fact that the soil would be able to hold more moisture would help us out during that period.
