Thrifty Thinking: Double Glazed Windows

Are you thinking of having new windows installed? If you're in the UK, you can Click Here to hear from up to four contractors with one easy quote request.

For those of you unfamiliar with what double glazing is, it's a process where two panes of gas are glazed with a space between them. This trapped air (sometimes a specific gas is trapped between the panes) acts as extra insulation to help avoid heat loss in the winter and heat coming in from outside in the summer. It also reduces condensation on the inside of the windows and helps cut out some of the outside noise (we noticed a huge difference when we replaced our incredibly old single-pane windows with newer windows, in terms of heat loss around the windows and noise from outside).

If you're in the UK, you may also qualify for certain grants to help cover the cost of upgrading to double-glazed windows. The site contains information on that, as well as other helpful information regarding window replacement.

Even if you aren't in the UK, you can still benefit from the principle of shopping around before making your decision. My husband and I did. You may have to deal with pushy salespeople or those who will try to up-sell you or pressure you to make an immediate decision. My advice is to go with other companies, those that are lower-pressure and actually give you time to think (we had one guy ask us "What can I do to get you to buy from us?" and when we said "Let us think about it for a day" he basically walked out on us).
