As parents, we are always moving around, cleaning up with kids, playing, running errands - and it's easy to pull something as we get older and less flexible. Kids also can be injury-prone with their many activities. Many OTC pills can have side effects, especially with repeated use.
Salonpas® has products safe to use for children 12 and up (except Pain Relief Patch and Arthritis Patch, which are approved for usage for ages 18+). These non-pill, topical pain relief products can provide relief from minor aches and strains in a safe manner. Salonpas® also has a great feature on their website with advice for pain management from Dr. Ken Kronhaus, M.D., Ph.D. and Host of Good Day Health with Dr. Ken; Dave Endres, Physical Therapist, Co-Founder of SPEAR Physical Therapy in New York City; and Stephanie Smith, Spa Director and Licensed Massage Therapist at the Viana Hotel & Spa. These tips include explanations of transdermal (through the skin) pain relief, the role of exercise, and how massage can help pain relief.
I got to try some of the products from Salonpas®. The Pain Relieving Gel-Patch Hot is a new advancement in patch therapy with capsaicin (0.025%) and menthol (1.25%). Capsaicin is an ingredient found in some hot peppers, including cayenne peppers, which makes the peppers spicy hot. When capsaicin is used on the skin topically, it helps relieve pain by first stimulating and then diminishing the intensity of pain signals in the body. The Pain Relieving Jet Spray uses highly pressurized jet force to deliver a strong cooling effect to the skin without greasy feeling or messy drip.
The Pain Relieving Massage Foam combines the benefits of self-massage with a powerful, clean drying medicine, which provides relief for even tough pain. It uses both menthol (3%) and methyl salicylate (10%), to deliver pain relief in seconds.
The products do work. A lot can be said for the effect of delivering different sensations to help distract the body and ease pain. The Jet Spray does work with no mess, and same with the massage foam (which is my favorite product of the bunch, since I love massages, both self-massaging and from my husband). I didn't try out the patches, but my parents really liked them; the arthritis patch was good for my mom's knee.
