If you have a lawn, you know that sometimes in the summer it can look lush and green and sometimes dry and brown - it all depends on the temperature and weather. There are a lot of things you can do to keep it healthy, and you can make some good choices that are good for the lawn and for the planet.
First of all, mow appropriately. You don't need to mow really short, it's actually better to mow it a little bit longer - about 2 1/2 inches. This provides healthy grass, stimulating growth and providing enough length to shade the roots. Secondly, leave the clippings on the grass. As they decompose they'll fertilize the grass left behind. And mow in the evening - it puts less stress on the grass.
Then, consider eco-friendly fertilizer and weed control. There are a variety of options that are healthier for the environment, containing no phosphorus and providing a chemical-free alternative. Something as simple as corn gluten can fertilizer the lawn and prevent some weeds by using pre-emergent weed control (killing unsprouted seeds).
Finally, water appropriately. Whether you use a hose or drip irrigation system - or even lawn sprinklers - give the lawn a good soaking, but not too frequently. One long watering session is better for the grass than frequent short ones, as it soaks the soil deep down and encourages a strong root system. Early morning watering is best, to avoid water loss due to evaporation and also to prevent fungus that sometimes can occur when you water at night.
