I love scented candles. I like the aromas they make, and I also really like the ambiance they provide in a room. That's why I'm much more likely to use candles than any other types of air fresheners, especially since I don't like continuous scent. I like the scent to be special. (The exception is a gel air freshener/odor absorber I use next to the diaper pail, because the constant scent and absorbing of the urine smell really helps keep the girls' room smelling much better). Since I like to only have scent when I want it, most plug-in and gel-type air fresheners aren't what I'm looking for. And the atmosphere candles provide is more appealing to me than spray air fresheners.
However, I also have small children at home, so leaving candles lit isn't always a good plan, especially if I want them in a room where we don't have any high shelves suitable for candles. That makes things like LED tea lights an intriguing option. I don't have to worry about anyone burning themselves or tipping the candles over, creating a fire hazard or a wax spill that's difficult to clean up. LEDs are energy-efficient and last for many many hours. Some obviously don't look like true candles, so they're best suited for placing in fancy holders that will hide the fake looking "flame" but still provide the same light of a tea light. However, you can get some nowadays that are a lot more real looking.
If you like the scent of a candle, not just the mood candlelight creates, then scented battery operated lights are a better option. You can get many different scented options, so it's easy to find something that fits the right season or mood.
Battery operated candles can be a good option, not just for people with small children, but also for people with pets (you don't want your cat knocking it over or a dog's wagging tail created a problem) and parties (if you have a full house, it's a lot easier for someone to inadvertently stumble and knock over a candle).
