Parenting Pointers: Love of Literacy

If you have reluctant readers, there are a lot of things you can do to get them a little more interested in reading. Reading to them helps - at any age. You can try starting a book, getting them hooked, and then having them finish it. This also works with audio books.

If they love movies, consider having them read the book first, and then watch the movie for the differences. Or have them make their own movie or play based on the books they read.

Make books a reward, not a punishment. Let them pick out a book for a job well done. Instead of leaving money if you do the tooth fairy, have them leave a book instead, or have Santa leave a pocket-sized book in the stocking.

Make reading relevant. Let them choose the topics of their books. If the book centers around a particular culture or time period, cook food particular to that region or era. If they love screen time, let them read e-books.

Encourage writing too - thank-you cards, stories, fan mail to favorite celebrities. The sky is the limit for ways kids can write!
